How to Freshen Up Your Apartment for a New Year

You’re ready to tackle the new year with a positive attitude, resolutions, and attainable goals. To match your fresh perspective on life, it’s time to freshen up your apartment as well. Consider the following five tips to make your apartment at The Place at Terracina feel like paradise:

Start With a Purge

You’ve collected random items, papers, knick knacks, and things you didn’t even know you had over the last year. If you’re going to take on the task of freshening up your apartment, you need to start with a clean slate. This means you need to get rid of the mess and clutter before you even think about redecorating or adding new items. Go through everything in your apartment (yes, that means emptying your drawers and going through your closet too) and decide what is staying, being donated, or going in the trash.

Update Accessories

Because you have some remodeling limitations in an apartment, accessories are your best friend. Liven up your old accessories by giving them some color or replacing them all together. For example, you can swap out your old lamp shade with one that has a bright color or pattern on it. Add a new rug to your living room that adds a bit of texture compared to your other furniture. Recover your couch pillows, repaint your coffee table, or hang new art on the wall. Just a few quick changes can make the room feel brand new.

Try a new Color Palette

A new year means new colors. In fact, Pantone comes out with a new color every year (this year’s is ultra violet). If you want to keep up with home trends, or just try something new, utilize a new color palette throughout your apartment. If you can afford it, replace your comforter, sheets, pillowcases, and curtains in your bedroom with complementary colors. For your living room, lie down a rug in a bold color, replace the pillows, and find accent pieces that work with your new color scheme. Go with something bright and happy to match your positive attitude for 2018.

Put Everything Away

After you’ve done all the hard work of getting rid of needless items, set a resolution to keep your apartment clean and tidy this year. Invest in containers, folders, and other organization systems to make sure everything has its own place in your home. This will help you cut down on stacks of paper, clothes coming out of your drawers, and other items taking up precious counter space. Instead of telling yourself that you’ll put it away later, make a point to put everything away immediately.

Add Some Life

Make your apartment come alive with some fresh air, floral scents, and beautiful colors by adding some plant life to your apartment. There are plenty of indoor plants you can choose from that are easy to take care of, such as aloe, snake plants, pothos, and philodendron. If you have a sunny window and a green thumb, you can plant some colorful flowers to brighten up your apartment. Or, if you’re really ambitious, try planting an indoor garden full of herbs and small vegetables.
